The Natal Coast has the greatest variety of shark species than any other coastline in the world. 160 of 350 recognized species occur in SA Waters. The Ragged Tooth (Carchanirus taurus) and the Zambezi Shark (Carchanirus leucus) are two of the species more frequently encountered sharks in the waters of Natal.
We offer a lecture on the unique biology of these two species of shark – the objective being to enhance the divers encounter with these animals. If required, we will gladly arrange a shark dive at either the Protea Banks or Aliwal Shoal.
The lecture includes details on the fascinating history of shark attack off the Natal Coast and how events like Black December initiated the formation of the Natal Sharks Board. In our lecture we describe the methodology behind the shark nets, the disadvantages of the meshing program, and touch on what alternatives to the nets are being considered.
